Thanks to everyone who tuned in to our live chat with Grameen Foundation’s new President & CEO, Steve Hollingworth. For those of you who missed it, here are a few highlights:
- Steve’s background and why he joined Grameen Foundation: He was first exposed to the devastating effects of poverty while studying abroad in Columbia when he was in college. He has always admired Grameen Foundation because it seeks to understand the needs of the poor by working with them and institutions that serve them. He believes Grameen Foundation is at the forefront of making impactful changes with the poor.
- Grameen Foundation’s health work: Grameen Foundation aims to reach 30 million women with better health access over a three year period through its open-source MOTECH (Mobile Technology for Community Health) platform. Just this year MOTECH was adopted by the government of India to get vital health information in the hands of poor women who are pregnant or who have recently given birth.
- Grameen Foundation’s focus on empowering women: Steve’s personal experience and empirical data show that investing in women is the best way to ensure that poverty does not transfer from generation to generation. “Women hold really critical responsibilities for family size, for economic well-being of the family, for learning readiness of their children.”
