Improving Health through Mobile Phone Solutions

A lack of trained healthcare professionals working in rural areas make the poor and poorest highly vulnerable to disease, debilitating emergencies and significantly shortened life spans.

Grameen Foundation’s Mobile Health solutions focus on providing better patient care, helping healthcare providers become more efficient, and making modern medical information easily accessible and relevant, to improve health outcomes for the poor and poorest.

Expanding Infant and Maternal Outreach in Ghana
Grameen Foundation’s Mobile Technology for Community Health, or MOTECH, program is working to reduce high infant and maternal mortality rates in Ghana.
Using a basic mobile phone, community healthcare providers collect patient data and upload records to a centralized database. Patient records are analyzed to establish personalized care schedules, and reminders are sent to nurses and patients about care visits. Recorded messages containing advice on pregnancy-related issues, important facts about fetal development and reminders about healthcare visits also are sent to expectant mothers.
Women are especially encouraged to have a healthcare provider attend their delivery and have their babies examined within 48 hours of birth.
 
Building on the successful pilot program funded by the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, Grameen Foundation is expanding the MOTECH program across Ghana, in partnership with the Ghana Health Service. Generous support for this phase is provided by the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation and the Saving Lives at Birth Partners: United States Agency for International Development (USAID), the Government of Norway, the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, Grand Challenges Canada, and the World Bank.
 
Improving Care for HIV/AIDS Patients in India
We are extending the Mobile Health technology platform to a new geography and health priority with our HIV/AIDS program in India. With a grant from Johnson & Johnson, the program will help patients make more informed choices by sending reminders to patients about medications and providing tips on healthy living.
